Is there something wrong with our food?
I eat a healthy diet, that includes lots of vegetables and I don’t eat junk food very often, so what could possibly be wrong with what I eat?
If that’s what you’re thinking, you’re not alone. That’s the way it should be, but unfortunately it’s no longer true.
Conventional (non-organic) food, found in the grocery store, though it looks good, may be grown with the application of the herbicide RoundUp, which contains the chemical called glyphosate. This chemical is causing many diseases today, including many cancers. In fact there are many class-action lawsuits going on right now against the company, Bayer / Monsanto, that has the patent on this product.
Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It’s designed to kill weeds, but the unintended consequence is that it kills the beneficial bacteria in the soil and in your gut. It also stimulates bad bacteria to grow in your gut – such as e-coli, salmonella, and c-difficile. These normally are in the gut in small amounts, but when the good guys are killed by antibiotics – either by prescription or in the food we eat every day – then those bad guys proliferate and cause trouble and disease in our bodies. The imbalance between the good and bad bacteria is called dysbiosis.
Glyphosate use on crops also reduces the uptake of minerals into the plants because it kills the living organisms in the soil. These are needed by the plants so that when they take them in they can produce the nutrients our bodies need. So our foods are no longer as nutrient-dense as they once were! For example, we’d have to eat a whole bag of oranges in order to get the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin C.
What’s the answer?
1. The only way to know that you aren’t ingesting this chemical when you eat is to buy organic food as much as possible. Organic farmers can’t use it.
2. Supplement with a pharmaceutical-grade multi-vitamin to ensure you are getting all the nutrients your body needs. If it’s not pharmaceutical-grade, you won’t know where the raw ingredients came from and the product may contain impurities.
3. If you eat meat, be sure that it is raised without the use of antibiotics. Also be sure to buy organic eggs and milk (including cheese).
Can’t I just wash it off? Glyphosate can’t be washed off. It accumulates in the shoots, roots, and reproductive tissues of the plants. In grains, it accumulates mostly in the bran. Rice is one of the highest-sprayed crops in the world because most of it is grown in countries where the use of these toxins is not regulated. So be sure to buy organic rice!
